"Legend Unleashed" (Keeping Secrets, Book 1) by M. Latimer-Ridley (Young Adult, Urban Fantasy genre) Book trailer: [link]
When an infamous criminal is unleashed from his prison, it has consequences for everyone in Carwick. Temperance Levinthal in particular…
Temperance is satisfied with her ordinary life. Dealing with her eccentric, childlike parents is all the excitement she needs. That changes when Alastair Byron returns home.
After a failed matchmaking attempt by her father, sparks fly between her and Alastair-just not the good kind.
They are forced together though, when they are implicated in a grisly murder. Their search for the truth leads them to a secret world beneath Carwick, filled with werewolves, wizards and other magical faey.
However, uncovering the truth is far more dangerous than they’d ever imagined.
Again, I rather like the intervening concern for mundane things- like the fire hazard of all those candles. I feel like the different reactions set up the characters nicely and quickly. (Okay, and it's something I think of too. I love candles, but am always skeptical of people just letting them burn unwatched for atmosphere...)
Thank you so much!! Glad you like the character set ups that makes us very happy!! I'm always thinking about forgetting candles when I light them, though I love them too!! It's atmosphere versus safety sometimes!
Loved this bit, so funny. Glad a lot of the people I know who are wiccan/pagan aren't like this, so I don't have to put up with all of Temperance's troubles. XD
some of the lines seemed off a bit to me though. like: "“Goodbye, Wiccans!” Temperance called, hopping off the stairs."
I just can't help but find it weird to address a bunch of people by their religion. I have the image of myself leaving a church or something and shouting out 'bye Christians!' I think I would receive a lot of glares for a comment like that. But maybe that's just me, perhaps this particular group of characters finds it more acceptable? It's a fictional setting compared to real life, so I'll give it that much of a stretch on the matter.
Despite my weird picky brain, I still enjoyed it very much and can't wait for the next part to be put up. <3
Really delighted you enjoyed it!! And thanks so much for the comment!
I think Adora and the other women are so jovial and unconventional they wouldn't mind Temperance saying goodbye to them like that. And that's just really who Temperance is too, she's quite flippant! In real life, you're right, it probably wouldn't go down too well though!
Coolio! I can't wait to see what Alastair and Temprance do when they leave the house. Somehow it seems like they'll be awkward around each other for a while, then end up falling for each other.
